Fast City

Some people think that Fastov is just a train station. This, of course, is not the case. There is also a railway station, so Fastov has been a hub station since 1870. However, this does not mean that there is nothing to stumble over except the Fastov paths.

Let's start with the name. It is extremely Ukrainian in its phonetics. Like hverma, for example. Because it seems to have something to do with tails. Once upon a time there was a bloody battle between the Russians and the steppe people in these parts. The severed tails of the nomads' horses were for the princely army like the scalps of enemies for the Indians. Hence the Tails or Bragging.
Fastov (Khvostov) is an ancient settlement that has been known in chronicles since the 15th century.

In addition to the tailed version, the city seems to be named after the river or streams that were called "phosamas&(I know that the fosa is a side ditch). Some people even hear something Scythian in this word.

Local researchers found out that the name Fast (Fost) occurs only 2 times - in 912 and 944. It is important that the name is found in historical documents - treaties with the Greeks, and not in legends or legends.

The year 1390 is considered to be the recognized date of the city's formation. At that time, the letter of the Lithuanian Prince Vladimir Algerdovich confirmed the right to own the Fast family of the princes Rozhanovsky.

In 1593, the Kiev bishop, thinker and poet Joseph Vereshchinsky sought to exempt the city from paying taxes, created a parish here, built a church and a castle. He even renames Fastov the New Vereshchin. After his death, the town becomes Fast again. By the decree of King Sigismund III of 1601, Fastov was granted numerous additional privileges.

There were two stellar episodes in Fastov's story. The first is the special status of the city as the de facto capital of the Pali State". Cossack Colonel Semyon Paliy was an active participant in many campaigns. Fighting alternately against Turks and Poles, Paly appeals to the Moscow tsar with a request to promote the unification of Right-bank and Left-Bank Ukraine into a single hetman state.

Paliy introduces autonomous management in a large area with the collection of duties and general protection of lands. Paliy chooses Fastov as his residence.

The government first imprisons the colonel for such anti-Polish activities. However, he later finds understanding and returns Palia to managing Fastov with Jan Sobieski's decision. In turn, the Moscow government, which was initially skeptical of Paliy's appeals, offers him a choice between Moscow and Warsaw. It's like he's choosing Poland. But after a few years he was allied with the Swedish King Charles XII, on the contrary, he incited the Cossacks against the traitor Ivan Mazepa.

In general, it all ends first with imprisonment in Baturin, then exile to Siberia, and then rehabilitation and honorable burial near Kiev.

I did not bypass Fastov and Gaydamak. And during the Koliv region, its individual leaders make Fastov their residence, which in return did not bring anything good to the city.

Taras Shevchenko repeatedly visits Fastov. His biographers are now arguing whether he personally participated in archaeological excavations, or limited himself to drawing and recording folk art.

In 1870, a route to Odessa was built through Fastov. Industrial facilities are being built in the city: brick, soap and honey factories, a distillery, a Siebert brewery (the brewery is still operating as part of Obolon JSC, for example, Wheat is produced here), a boiler and mechanical plant (Brandt plant, and now - the gloomy standard of socialist realism "Red October"). The outstanding inventor Nikolai Benardos worked at the latter.

Benardos owns more than 120 inventions, including electric welding and metal cutting. Nikolai Nikolaevich was buried in Fastov, where he settled in the late 1890s.

So, about the second stellar episode in Fastov's story. Here, on December 1, 1918, the act of unification of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the West Ukrainian People's Republic was signed. The act was signed right in the carriage. Longin Tsegelsky and Dmitry Levitsky arrived from the ZUNR, Vladimir Vinnichenko and Simon Petlyura from the UNR. A merger, to be honest, meant more like a takeover.

Fastov's military and post-war history is no different. The railway remains the main center of his life. Twelve enterprises and about 5,000 people.

The proximity to Kiev has some advantages. Some large companies began to "escape" from the capital's high cost here. However, it is difficult to say that their activities have had a strong effect on Fastov's landscapes so far.
