Faculty of architecture feels delighted to share the report of one day Interdisciplinary workshop event on furniture design and model making for M. Arch Interior Architecture II year students and B. Des II year students. The faculty in charge of this event is Ar. HARINYA MEENU A and Ar. ZAKIA FATHIMA. This interdisciplinary event took place in Furniture Manufacturer’s Workshop in Madhanandhapuram, Appar Wood Ware, on 01.11.2022.
The expert, Mr. Appar Lakshmanan, is well-known in this field, and patiently explained the whole process involved in the manufacture starting from the stage of design to the final finishes of the end product. He demonstrated the use of every equipment and tools in the workshop, and gave a small crash course on the history of wooden furniture. He also took the time to discuss the types of wood and joinery detailings that the student can use for their furniture based on the design they are working on.
In this one-day workshop, the morning session focused on the lecture on designing and making traditional wooden furniture and the durability of the wood from the different species of Tamil Nadu trees The resource person explained in detail the Nagasanam traditional Tamil Nadu baby chair. The afternoon session was a hands-on workshop on miniature furniture making demonstration. He also explained the concept of woodturning to the students
Students had a hands-on session on wooden cutting and furniture designing the whole day was very well organized with a knowledge-gaining session which was very supportive for the students for inculcating the design thinking process.
The students were exposed to the different types of wood used in the design and manufacture of the wooden furniture and wood wares, and the different types of equipment and tools used in the making of the same.
It was a very interactive session as the students with the guidance of the expert resource personnel, took a hands-on approach to the furniture making. He also gave students tips on how to think in terms of safety and functionality of a furniture during the design process. He encouraged the students to ask questions directly as he was explaining, thereby having a lively interactive Q&A session.
The overall feedback of the students was overwhelmingly positive, and the students gained a fresh perspective looking through a manufacturer’s point of view in regards to the furniture design and its finished product.
