Report on a school visit to Dr. MGR Home & Higher Secondary School for the Speech and Hearing Impaired, Ramavaram, Chennai-89 organized by the Faculty of Education, Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute on 25th July 2024 at 9.30 a.m. with B.Ed. Second Year students. We aimed at gaining knowledge about the educational system and students’ daily routines at the school.
Initially, we met the Principal of the school and handed over a cheque donated by our Management. The Principal was humble and kind, providing an overview of the school, their daily routines, and highlighting the importance of special education.
She assigned a staff member to guide us in observing the classes and interacting with the students. We interacted with students from 1st to 12th standard with the help of specialist tutors. The students were smart, active and communicated effectively using sign language. It was a joy to see and interact with their smiling faces.
Our visit comprised totally three sessions:
Session 1: Observation
We observed various classes conducted by special teachers, including a loop induction classroom for 7th grade, group aid (with headphones) and FM headphones. We also saw the clay moulds used for hearing-impaired children and learned about their creation process. We gained a comprehensive understanding of the special education process.
Session 2: Drawing Competition
Drawing kits were provided to the students by the Faculty of Education. The students participated enthusiastically and showcased their talents. We appreciated their efforts by giving them prizes.
Session 3: Awareness Programme
The final session focused on raising awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our B.Ed. students educated the school students about the SDGs, which proved beneficial for them. The campus was well-maintained and the staff demonstrated a strong commitment to student success.
In conclusion, the school visit provided valuable insights into the practices at the school. It was instrumental in enriching our knowledge and paving the way for informed decision-making and impactful strategies moving forward.
The Faculty of Education is pleased to express its gratitude to our honorable president for the opportunity to organize this event for aspiring teachers. Finally, heartfelt thanks to all the executives for their constant encouragement.
